How To Potty Train Your Toddler
Potty training can be an overwhelming experience for any parent and toddler, but how can you tell if your child is ready to take that next big step in life and become potty trained?
Often a toddler will show signs that he or she is ready. You may notice your child pulling at their diaper and perhaps trying to remove it when it is wet or soiled, or you may even see a child hide in a corner to “poop.”
Here are some tips to help your toddler potty train smoothly:
. Allow your toddler to watch you as you use the bathroom. This will familiarize the whole process of using the bathroom. Encourage him/her to ask questions and answer them to put their minds at ease.
. Encourage your child to sit on the potty even before they are ready to be potty trained. It is essential to have your child feeling comfortable with a potty, even if it is to only sit on it for a few minutes watching television or reading a book.
. Have multiple potties around your home, particularly in bathrooms and also in the room where you and your child spend most of your time. They need to be close by when nature comes calling.
Some parents may like to use a reward system for their child when they are potty training such as using a chart with stickers. Another option is to buy some “big girl” or “big boy” pants to encourage your child to use the potty. You could involve your child in buying some new pants with their favorite characters on them.
It can also be useful to choose a period when you can be at home and give potty training your full attention. Make sure you don’t have any appointments or play dates scheduled when you decide to tackle potty training.
Potty training isn’t as daunting as a lot of parents make it out to be, and with just the right amount of patience, love, and encouragement, your child will undoubtedly be out of diapers and using the potty in no time.
